Webinars, do they work to Bentley?

Today I attended the first Bentley online conference presented as a new format to what it was their annual conference called by them as BeConnected.

Feature: Approved

After my sickness the last time I tried to register, I turned the mood when I saw that via Media Player it has been run well the videos or live conferences. It goes on with common problems like to make printscreen, because that is not possible.

Also the way how to communicate and make presentations is going well, a stylish clip_image002girl video makes transitions and I do not see any problem. Then, in a panel the earned credits are stored for attending classes, but it’s visible after 24 hours.

It’s just great, that the presentations on demand, once registered and passed the release date can be seen as often as desired. The audio goes very clear, it does not consume much bandwidth and you can even press the accelerator button to pass screens every 20 seconds of what it would be alive so it is handy if you want to see the PowerPoint and not the audio or take notes. You can also select the starting point on the progress bar. In general, the functionality is well and I imagine that will be available for some time.

For those who are alive, you can leave the play button on, it will begin when ready.

Theme: Approved

In this goes well, there is enough content for Roads, geospatial, structures, plants, mining, plumbing and service networks.

At least the issue appears to be fairly complete for areas where Bentley has a specialty, which has brought very loyal users who started with Microstation but now, exploit particularized applications.

Audience: I have my doubts

There is something that is lost on the way, that feeling of going through a corridor of the convention center with a Starbuck in hand and sees into a room where the amount of hearing and PowerPoint background invites you to take a look.

I guess that from the other side must flow information about how many people are watching online streaming, but in my opinion, world is not ready for this, at least in the live conference. And I do not want to contradict my theory, I know this is the way the world is walking in the area of training, but I have serious doubts about what I’ve seen in a live conference, where it is often difficult to attract 25 stakeholders (that have nothing urgent to do), hold their interest (which is assumed to exist from the moment they are there) and force them to comment (when in a hurry to leave and just come to ask for the card). Now transform this to the new format, where its more likely that there more than 25 stakeholders because they no longer need to be in the U.S., but have a sooo busy agenda many of them do not have a decent connectivity and once started the presentation they can simply click elsewhere.

Bentley’s audience is not ESRI’s and AutoDesk’s, where I had to fight and bargain for a place in a conference where there are 200 people. And Bentley should think about this, because online training is a good solution, but experience shows that there must be a very strong commitment for truly working like this.

A couple of years ago, Bentley conducted a survey among the attendees at the annual conferences and 95% claimed to be satisfied, I suppose that at the end of this exercise they will try it again and I can assure you that many long for the Starbuck.

Content: it should be seen

I have participated in the conference presented by Pat Filoteo from Microsoft. I was personally disappointed with the poverty of presentation; this would have left last and not the opening geospatial line where he has come to say that… the warm water is warm.

The topic was interesting from the beginning (The spatial is not special) or as it was in English, “Spatial is not special” to this friend it could be good a PowerPoint course because his problem is of shape, not so much for the background.

Salvageable, the essence of the issue, that spatial now is simply another data, primarily in the web environment where standardisation has been a work that have been commissioned to small hybrid applications known as mashups. But for the theme, it has been poor, then I was waiting to see who asked or consulted; or I didn’t understood well, that live views would be heard by everyone, or silence was too long.

It was interesting the comparison between the conventional way to see the spatial environment, in which there were:

  • Capture and coordinates’ normalization
  • Create layers on a map
  • Obtain data
  • Create layers overlap
  • Publish

While the future is simplified to tabular data, as the spatial side is just an attribute… the deployment is a matter of conventional web.

It had not been wrong, if he would show more than printscreens which have integrated Virtual Earth. A graph even with auto shapes (rather than simple vignettes), where it can be seen that the data have been the same, that what now has are some more tables that are referred to the spatial environment, turned into a deployment, which is a novelty and which makes us see spatially although we always think. But in the end, I can understand that for Microsoft, there is nothing special that show in the spatial environment… total Google has ate them alive.

A great item easy wasted… easy to say for us, who we were the audience clip_image003

What’s next

Now I have to wait for the geospatial thematic and territorial development starting from July 1.
