How to hide a raster segment

I’m about half an hour trying to explain this to a technician not too expert in Computing, but as he sympathize me, I think it’s better to write the procedure and systematize the free consultations.

The case

There is a background image, but we want to hide part of it for print and display purposes. We have Microstation V8.5

The options

I talked before about how to do something like this with Descartes, but for the purpose of merging several raster and save them as new images. In this case, it is not exactly what is needed, as it’s for display purposes only and it isn’t intended to cut the images.

So the option is to do so by using the clip of raster.

The solution

In the Raster Manager, select the images you want to hide and the “Edit / Clip” option

Then a window appears and asks:

… You’re trying to make clip, can you tell from where??? Then you should choose the method of cutting and mode.

1. through an element

It can be a drawn object, which is a closed figure as a polygon. So we chose the option Element, and then Clip Boundary; this is the result.

After choosing the object type (method) that hides, it is defined if you want to hide what’s inside, or the edge. For this there are two options:

  • Clip Mask, hides what’s inside
  • Clip Boundary, hides what’s outside

2.  through a table

In this case, it is possible to make a picture without having to be an object; this will choose “Block” and mark the box with the mouse. Then apply a new click to see the result.

In this case, it is possible to make a box without having to be an object, for this “Block” is chosen, and it’s marked the box with the mouse. Then, apply a new click to see the result.

3. through a fence

If there is a fence, this may have “flood” properties and can be practical for complex figures or boundaries that are not a closed shape. First the fence must be done, and it can be chosen from the “Method” option.

The following image shows several clips facts, red with the “Element” method, the cross with “Fence” one, others with “Block”. And everyone can live together, the image is the same.

This method of the fence is very handy, because in MicroStation XM or V8i versions can be save the fences as if they were models.

There is also the “modify clip” option, which allows editing vertexes, as I did with one of the boxes. To remove one of the clip it’s used “edit / unclip” and can be selected individually or all boundaries.

Step by step

Summary of the procedure for non-technological people; in this case, there is an image downloaded from Google Earth, and we want to cut it respect on a 1:10,000 map

clip_image004

1.  Call the raster

2. Touch it in the raster manager

3. Edit / clip

4. Select Method “Block”

5. Select “Clip Boundary” Mode

6. Make a box with the mouse: To activate the snap press ctrl+shift

7. Clic on the screen.

By the fact that this quadrant is not exactly a rectangle, you can choose “edit / modify clip” and try to reach the ends to their respective corners, always with the ctrl+shift activated snap

For the mock

Man, I hope that even a drink can be dropped when you come here… because it is in the readme.
