My recent travels literally forced me to accept in exchange of a doubt point of view an Ipad, between the courage to stay without charge in a 11 hour flight, the fury of 27 hours travelled by land because of Aeromexico, –which is a calamity-, and the pike at the suggestion of a friend who had almost convinced me. Finally, before the year ends I ended up scraping the belly rosette stone and chafing the fabled white apple on the back, just below…
My fear was just the same questions released by the geeks, the poor I-kotex (equally pronounced in English) won on its first morning a series of jokes and criticism that many came to think that it was one of the first Mac errors. After nearly a week of traveling across it, here are my arguments why I decided not to return it:
1. It’s Apple. This definitely is the strongest reason why the iPad has been well sold because they have been left other prototypes that make competition and win it in miles (and in price). But it’s a Mac, and in just a few months there are thousands of applications from large and small companies develop for Ipad -free and paid-.
I love the Lenovo Ideapad a hybrid with the versatility of being a laptop and when removed, as a tablet; but beyond MundoGeek Friends’ reviewing, I believe you, if you can find it in a store (or estore). There is also for fear (cool) the HP Slate, with two cameras, usb, digital pen and other wonders but even though HP is a very famous brand in the world, it’s not the same in gadgets; and if you want to buy one of these toys you must do this in the U.S., London, a large city or wait a couple of weeks to arrive. But these toys are geeks craving who buy them because they overcome the compulsion and this has been understood by Mac which has spread its stores almost everywhere, where you can see, touch and buy from a single iPod nano to a Macbook Air .
1. It is not an Iphone. Many questioned that it looked like four Ipod together, and criticized that it was just one more item. But while it is true that what the features are similar, the applications never will. So do not expect the iPad has phone functions, it’s not for that.
Seeing the Bentley’s showmen demonstrating a prototype over Microstation that allow virtual navigation within a plant with many pipes and valves made me great satisfaction. Also recently viewing AutoDesk’s recently turns back to Mac with its full battery design. And it is, that for GIS / CAD applications won’t be little hope, as this will eventually allow that query in field will no longer be a simple redline and becomes an online interaction with the data; something for which the tablet is almost ready. Then it will be what the PDA never could be for reasons of size, –which in this case does matter-.
2. It’s not a Laptop. It has no USB slots; it has no camera, no integrated physical keyboard. It does not have anything like that. Because it is not a laptop, it’s made to work in the cloud, that’s why everything has a button to send by mail, that’s why it’s always looking for a wireless network, that’s why the 3G works so clearly and Latitude puts on you the map just where you are.
Although for those not accustomed to the virtual keyboard, there are toys that make it a nice frame to write more comfortable.
Well, and then what is it?
3. It’s an expensive book. The office applications are relatively inexpensive, generally go for $ 5, competitive and compatible with Office and in many cases higher. Thus for common work there is nothing to worry about, just have to learn how to scratch as armadillo and understand things that were complicated in Office but equally and more attractive made by Pages (Word), Numbers (Excel) and Keynote (PowerPoint).
Most applications seek how to replace what we do with an agenda that on May has no longer available pages; the four workbooks that need to be loaded in the afternoon for the University; the notebook where you have to view mail every 30 minutes; the freehand drawings book.
It is definitely a gadget. It’s another type of object that will change our way of doing things, but light years after from what was wanted by Bill Gates, with maturity and style. As well as Nokia taught us how to message with a finger, Mac is teaching us to do with the fingertips and nails.
It’s a great smoke of Apple, with the Itunes panel everything is done. From there it is updated the operating system version, each time you log it makes backup in case. Just type and all the colorful little buttons fall so, if you do not control, in a while you’ve got $ 34 to the board on matters you won’t occupy.
There is no time to question it, because there will be as many applications as business may exist. If it will be multi-tasking, is matter of waiting for a new OS version; if it will have Chrome for Ipad, quiet, quiet, what you should do by now is to buy once, one of 64 GB with Wi-Fi + 3G because it won’t change the chassis, there will only be more capacity with the same shell. This is an impossible dream with a PC.
By now my daughter left me amazed with her drawings made with AutoDesk Sketchbook Pro, my son bought Bob Sponge with a Bikini background and their Farmville coin and there he passes time touching with a finger the surf table so that Patrick skip on the jellyfish. And me… TeamViewer to operate the PC desktop, Skype and Facebook to do business, Chapters to finish writing my book, Note Taker to score / draw almost everything, WordPress for geosmoking… and waiting for the lower cloud for CAD/GIS applications.
Others … sure do not occupy an Ipad.
