Global statistics of Internet users

Recently Successful Exporter has been updated global statistics to the year 2011 related to the penetration and globally Internet use. Perhaps, it’s one of the best sources for this type of information consultation, not only at continent level, but at country and language level.

I take this post to show some data, and trends in egeomate visiting traffic behavior, less than a month of being released.

The following table shows the distribution of the 2 billion people with Internet access, a surprising 30% of the nearly 7 billion worldwide people.

Regions Population Users % of world
Asia 3,879,740,877 922,329,554 44.00%
Europe 816,426,346 476,213,935 22.70%
North America 347,394,870 272,066,000 13.00%
Latin America and Caribbean 597,283,165 215,939,400 10.30%
Africa 1,037,524,058 118,609,620 5.70%
Middle East 216,258,843 68,553,666 3.30%
Oceania 35,426,995 21,293,830 1.00%
TOTAL 6,930,055,154 2,095,006,005 100.00%

It is interesting to see how Latin America and the Caribbean are barely 10%, however the Spanish language is the third most widely used worldwide, subtracting the Brazilian Portuguese and adding Spain the percentage is down 10.

Seeing what happens with egeomate, it is interesting the difference with the geofumadas site, between not Hispanic traffic compared to what I have been accustomed to see in Geofumadas. See how the English-speaking readers come from all over the world, including countries such as Spain, Peru, Mexico, Argentina and Chile, unlike the Hispanic reader who is concentrated in country’s official language and some U.S. cities.

So that writing in English is really writing for a global market; I still can’t penetrate so the AutoCAD niche, but it is interesting to see how Microstation, Manifold and Mobile Mapper moves; issues of which there is little content on the Internet. The following table reflects the difference of the same map but at the country level;

(1-2) stands out the United States whose behavior is similar to Spain in geofumadas, with many visitors from different cities. Although there is no a city like Madrid or Barcelona for eating much of the traffic. Second is Canada, which unlike the U.S. cities there are few with significant traffic.

(3-4) third is the UK and then India, understandable as it was a British colony. But also because in recent years has had a tremendously technology boom and also for being the second-most populous country, it is an equivalent to Mexico in geofumadas.

(5) Then there is Brazil that unlike what we might expect by the similarity with the Spanish language and geographical proximity, the way to get them is by the English.

(6-10) the following countries, in order: Spain, Australia, Germany, Philippines and Vietnam. Curious group all included in the group of 20 countries with more Internet users, except for Australia which is a special case because it is 80% of users all over Oceania.

(11-15) these are 5 countries that I mention because as the tendency to stabilize grows, could take places of the previous group: Mexico, Malaysia, Netherlands, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

This is the case of Hispanic countries, of which we had spoken before. The red dots are the 10 busiest, the other countries in yellow are the next 5. Look that Mexico, USA and Spain are the only countries that have a coincidence between egeomate and geofumadas.

Statistics are cold. But learning is valuable and more than exciting. It is curious to see in Woopra how a user of one of those orange dots in India, right from Hyderabad enters egeomate and asks:

For a moment I felt that this friend is sitting on a sidewalk, wearing a turban and a flute to enchant a cobra … But in reality, is a user like all of us, in an office using AutoCAD, willing to move to Mac and aspiring to learn MapGuide this year.

If you want to see more statistics on Internet, I recommend Successful Exporter.
